Data license & scope
An attributed, bounded archive
The bundled chart dataset is adapted from the English Wikipedia yearly “List of Billboard Hot 100 number ones” tables, years 1970–2025, by Wikipedia contributors. Each year’s source URL, permanent revision, history link, retrieval time, input hash and weekly coverage report is included in the dataset. The relevant year and attribution are also included in every chart receipt.
The adapted dataset is distributed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0). You may reuse it, including commercially, subject to that license: retain attribution and license links, indicate changes, and share adaptations under the same license. See Wikimedia Terms of Use, section 7. Wikipedia contributors are identified through the linked articles and their revision histories.
What was changed
We extracted song titles, artist names and explicit weekly issue dates, expanded HTML rowspans, and normalized dates to ISO 8601. We did not infer consecutive runs from total weeks at number one. No lyrics, recordings, artist photography, album covers or Wikipedia logos are included.
Calendar convention and gaps
The lookup chooses the Saturday-dated edition inside the birthday’s Sunday–Saturday calendar week. This is an application convention. It does not claim the issue was published that day, that its tracking period matches that calendar week, or that a song played on the exact birth date.
The genuine Sunday-dated bicentennial edition, 4 July 1976, is retained as an excluded date in the source coverage report. The week ending 3 July 1976 is unknown in this Saturday-only lookup. Dates after the final included issue and years outside 1970–2025 are also unknown. This is an archive selection, not complete historical coverage. Source errors remain possible.
Application and design
The original code, CSS, record-sleeve illustration and icon are separate from the chart dataset and are offered under the MIT License. The generated design concept is a development reference only and is not served by the app. Billboard and Wikipedia names identify sources; they do not imply endorsement or affiliation.
